Le Web conference: As it happens

Le Web conference, the biggest tech conference in Europe, opens in Paris Wednesday.

Since it was founded in 2008 by Seesmic creator Loic Le Meur, the conference has attracted the web's best and brightest in large numbers. About 3,000 participants from 60 countries are attending this year's event.

From Google's Eric Schmidt to Spotify founder Daniel Ek to Instagram's Kevin Systrom, the list of Le Web's speakers reads like a "who's who" of the tech world.

This year, Le Web has also landed one of fashion's biggest names on to the main stage, designer Karl Lagerfeld, pictured above.

Many Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and executives will make big announcements at Le Web and over the next two days CNN's Stephanie Busari will be at the heart of the action, blogging and tweeting from the event. Check back here for updates. You can also follow Stephanie on Twitter.
LATEST:

1429 GMT: LeWeb host Loic Lemur is asking Facebook's Shields if there should be a Silicon Valley somewhere in Europe. Shields responds that Facebook enables people to work as virtual teams around the world, arguing that young people prefer to cluster around cities and are not being lured into safe jobs. Shields agrees that European tech is very strong and innovative and says that in difficult economic times, renaissance happens.

She also talks about how Facebook helps people with small businesses, saying the barriers to entry are fading. People are seeing traffic ignite through connecting with Facebook, she says.

1425 GMT: Shields is talking about how storytelling is essentially the essence of Facebook. She also talks about their collaboration with the UK's Guardian newspaper. Shields says Facebook is an education tool to discover newspapers in other countries. She makes the sweeping claim that Guardian users now don't go to the publication's website, but instead use Facebook to read the paper. Four million people have downloaded the Guardian app, she says.

1410 GMT: Facebook announcement: A plugin that allows you to let people subscribe to your updates from any site where you happen to be writing or communicating.

1407 GMT: A short Q&A with Andreev, now it's the event's first female speaker, Joanna Shields, vice president and managing director of Facebook... hilariously introduced as a "small start up," by Loic Le Meur.

1400 GMT: Now on stage: Andrey Andreev London Soho-based founder of Badoo. The hugely successful social network for hook ups!

1356 GMT: Schmidt has wrapped up now, but not before making a bold prediction related to Google’s research into completely automated vehicles: “In our lifetime it is a fair statement to say that the majority of cars will be driverless or driverless-assisted.”

The last of question for Schmidt proved the most popular so far: "Why have you not bought a company in France?" Cue loud applause from audience.

1349 GMT: Schmidt is taking audience questions now. Asked rather tangentially what kind of country Google sees itself as, he said: “We’re 13 years old – so think of us as a teenager. What I’ve learned about Google is we’re not a country , we do not have our own nuclear weapons, we do not have our own police force…”

He said Google’s “values are very distinct” citing the company’s shift out of Chinato Hong Kong when faced with restrictions imposed by authorities in Beijing.

“We believe in the power of individuals,” he said.

1337 GMT: Schmidt is talking up Google's Android system, saying it is "ahead of the iPhone now" in terms of sales, availability and popularity. "Android was created before the iPhone," he says, adding - with tongue firmly planted in cheek. "Ask Bing, I'm sure it will give you the answer."

1328 GMT: Schmidt is now talking about Google's role in the political upheaval in the Middle East this year: "Our contribution to the Arab Spring was to provide a tool to people who risked their lives. They were the courageous ones, not us. Everyone is overstating our role in the Arab Spring revolution."

He adds: "It’s now easier to start a revolution but harder to finish it," making the point that while it is now relatively simple to mobilize forces for political change, technology doesn't necessarily help when coming up with a replacement for existing regimes, often leading to disappointment.

"Once you’ve started the revolution, because of mobile phones and technology, expectations are very, very high."

1325 GMT: Schmidt confirms launch of a social web platform analytics.

1322 GMT: A mixed reaction in the Twittersphere to Eric Schmidt's talk so far. Some tweets saying the Android Ice cream demo is old news from two months ago. One tweeter, Carlos Domingo writes:

What a disappointment, Eric Schmidt interview is really a useless Android demo #fail #leweb11

1318 GMT: Android's Barra is taking us through Android 4.0. Cool features so far are Android Beam, which uses NFC, a "near-field communication" that authenticates the user. They've allowed every app to respond to an "NFC sharing tent," where users can tap phones together to download apps.

1316 GMT: Demo called Android Icecream Demo will be availalbe in Europe in next few days.

1310 GMT: Eric Schmidt: All the interesting new applications are going to be some combination of social, mobile and local."

1308 GMT: Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, is on stage now, alongside Hugo Barra, product management director for Android at Google. You can watch a live stream of their presentation here

1243 GMT: The first half of Europe’s biggest tech conference is now over and after six speakers, Karl Lagerfeld remains undoubtedly the biggest draw.

The Chanel designer adds much-needed glamour to what is essentially the biggest collection of geeks, er, sorry technophiles this side of Silicon Valley.

Most, including me, were expecting a remote, perhaps even haughty, fashion type. But they were disappointed. Lagerfeld spoke warmly and refreshingly honestly about his life.

There was not a spare seat in the packed auditorium as he revealed insights into his creativity and working life.

He also outed himself as something of an Apple "fanboy," owning four iPhones, each number given out to different categories of people, presumably in importance order.

Lagerfeld also owns 30-40 iPads! He uses them as diaries, photobooks and sketches. He even drew a sketch of Steve Jobs during his presentation.

Add to that collection hundreds of iPods with curated, annotated play lists and you get an idea of someone who takes his (Apple) technology very seriously indeed.

Lagerfeld was warm and funny and managed to set the twittersphere ablaze during his talk, becoming a trending topic for hours after.

He’s clearly a master of reinvention who thrives on using technology to keep himself current.

He was the first of the designers to form a collaboration with high street designers with his hugely-successful design for H&M.

As one Twitterer put it: "Karl Lagerfeld reminding me that those who are *truly* great also reflect balance of self awareness and humility.

Couldn’t agree more.

0951 GMT: Karl Lagerfeld tells the audience at the Le Web conference he will launch an exclusive online clothes collection called Karl.com.

The line will be launched in partnership with Net-A-Porter shopping portal on January 25.

"We will make fashion and technology history," he says.

The launch will include augmented reality, social media and much more, he adds.

Lagerfeld gives an exclusive sneak preview of the collection with a short video clip.

Lagerfeld tells the audience to fight banality and said he was a big fan of pop star Lady Gaga because she "hates banality."

He reveals he's a huge tech fan, carrying a suitcase with four iphones, an iPod and iPad.

The Chanel designer also charms the audience with a sketch of Steve Jobs on his iPad.

Amazon offers cheaper Kindle -- with ads

Would you buy a Kindle with on-screen ads in order to knock $25 off the price? Amazon hopes so.

The company announced its new "Kindle with Special Offers" on Monday, which will begin shipping May 3. Pre-ordering is available immediately. The ad-festooned Kindle will sell for $114, which is $25 less than its ad-free counterpart, Amazon's $139 Kindle Wi-Fi. The Kindle 3G is available for $189.

The Kindle's "special offers" and ads will appear on the e-reader's screensaver and at the bottom of its home screen. Amazon plans to mix together advertisements from launch sponsors including Buick, Olay and Visa with daily-deal style discount coupons.

Some of the discounts Amazon plans to offer in the initial weeks include a $20 Amazon gift card for $10 (a deal that was a monster hit when Amazon offered it earlier this year through LivingSocial), plus discounts on Amazon MP3 albums, Audible books and Kindle bestsellers.
Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) is also introducing an app called AdMash, which will let customers vote on potential future sponsored screensavers.

Amazon has never revealed sales figures for the Kindle. Price cuts late last year brought the most basic version down to $139, and Kindle apps are now available for a wide variety of devices -- including the iPhone, iPad as well as BlackBerry and Android phones.

But the Kindle seems to be doing well despite competition from e-readers including the Barnes & Noble (BKS, Fortune 500) Nook, the Sony (SNE) Reader and Kobo from Borders (BGP), as well as Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) multipurpose iPad.

Analysts expect the e-reader market to really catch fire when the price tag for the device drops below $100. Amazon implied that it's trying to get there.

"We're working hard to make sure that anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one," Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a prepared statement.

Microsoft and Yahoo: Search partners

After a year and a half of dealing, the tech giants reach a 10-year deal to take on Google, which holds a 65% market share in online search.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Microsoft and Yahoo reached a long-awaited partnership Wednesday in a bid to challenge Google's dominance in online search.

Under the 10-year deal, Yahoo.com and Bing.com will maintain their own branding but search results on Yahoo.com will say "powered by Bing." Yahoo, in turn, will be responsible for attracting premium advertisers.

Microsoft will pay Yahoo 88% of the revenue it gains from searches on Yahoo's sites. Microsoft will also have the rights to integrate Yahoo's search technology into its own existing Web search platforms.

Yahoo said the agreement will modestly decrease its overall revenue but increase its operating income by about $500 million annually.

Shares of Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500) tanked 12% on the news, as investors expected Microsoft to pay the company up to $1 billion in cash up front for the deal, albeit with a more modest revenue-sharing figure. Microsoft's (MSFT, Fortune 500) shares rose about 1%, and search leader Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) stock price fell 1%.

The deal is expected to close in early 2010. U.S. users will start to see the change three months later and users around the world will see the full effect within two years.

"This deal is really about scale," said Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz on a conference call. "By combining the ... technology of both companies, we can create a real, viable alternative for advertisers."

Microsoft said the transition will cost the company "several hundreds of millions of dollars," but it will benefit in the long run from the ability to charge advertisers more for its service, because the deal will improve the relevance of search results. Microsoft said it also expects to benefit from Yahoo's expertise, acknowledging that its new partner has more ad sales experience.

"This really is a win-win agreement both for Microsoft and for Yahoo," said Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer. "Consumers will get better products, and it will help the industry as a whole to prosper through our shared vision and shared values."

Bartz said that some Yahoo employees will eventually move over to Microsoft and that some search personnel would be laid off. But she added that the transition will occur over time, so virtually nothing will change at least until the deal is inked next year.
Google. Both Microsoft and Yahoo -- but especially Microsoft's Ballmer -- used their joint statement and conference call to offer several digs at search market leader Google.

In a joint statement, the companies said that "advertisers no longer have to rely on one company that dominates more than 70% of all search."

Ballmer argued that the search advertising market, as it is currently constructed, unfairly favors Google because of its dominance. He said many advertisers choose to enter into exclusive deals with leader Google to avoid the laborious process of entering into negotiations with three different companies.

But the new partnership will simplify that process, and "advertisers will know now that is is clearly the second place to work," said Ballmer.

He said he fully anticipates Google will launch an antitrust complaint against the partnership. "We'll likely face issues from 'the' competitor who may not like the competition," said Ballmer. "But our argument is we'll provide more competition, not less."

Google disagreed, saying in an emailed statement that, "There has traditionally been a lot of competition online, and our experience is that competition brings about great things for users. We're interested to learn more about the deal."

Microsoft and Yahoo will head to Capitol Hill and Brussels next week to begin the American and European regulatory processes for the deal.

An 18-month odyssey. It was a partnership that was a long time in the making. Microsoft's search market share has been slipping for more than two years, and the company has struggled to make its online advertising unit profitable. Meanwhile, Yahoo, once the search market leader, dropped to a distant second place behind leader Google by 2007.

The dealings between the two companies began Feb. 1, 2008, when Microsoft made an unsolicited $44.6 billion cash and stock bid for Yahoo. A week later, Yahoo rejected the bid, saying the offer "massively undervalues" the company.

In June of last year, Microsoft said it was no longer interested in acquiring Yahoo outright, but would like to enter a deal for Yahoo's search advertisement business.

Bartz and Ballmer said those preliminary discussions involved more cash up front for Yahoo but a less revenue sharing. Bartz said Yahoo insisted on a higher revenue number so it could invest in its long-term projects like its core online media businesses.

Though many analysts speculated that Microsoft's immediate success with its Bing search engine, unveiled last month, was the final nail in the coffin, Bartz said there was no one thing that pushed the deal through.

"It was the understanding and trust that we could have a partnership, and that takes time," said Bartz. "Finally the comfort level was there, and the proverbial snowball went down the hill. Once we reached a point in which it was clear that a deal was advantageous to both companies, we moved forward."

Ballmer said, for Microsoft, the deal wasn't better than the original revenue-sharing proposal, "just different."

Ericsson boss upbeat despite downturn

The head of Swedish-based telecommunications giant Ericsson says he believes the company is well placed to come through the economic crisis despite suffering a slump in profits.
Ericsson last week reported a 56 percent drop in second quarter net income to 831 Swedish kronor ($111 million), largely due to losses in its Sony Ericsson cellphone and ST Ericsson chipmaker joint ventures and restructuring costs.

But Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg told CNN the downturn in the company's fortunes was "much the way we had anticipated" and said the crisis also presented opportunities for growth

"We are preparing for a declining market with pretty sharp cost reductions but at the same time rememember now in the middle of this crisis we also have opportunities," Svanberg told Quest Means Business.

On Saturday Ericsson confirmed it had bought a majority stake in networking company Nortel's North American wireless business for $1.1 billion.

"We do expect our industry to be much less effected than other parts of society, because telephony is so important, both in mature and in emerging markets.

"Right now we have huge rollouts in China, in Japan, in the U.S., the world's leading economies. We have big market shares there and that's extremely encouraging."

Svanberg admitted Ericsson was performing less well in emerging markets in Africa, Latin America and central Europe but said there was still solid potential for growth.

"In these markets the underlying traffic trends and the need for upgrades are the same," he said
Svanberg said Ericsson had also improved its position in relation to its competitors.

"We have clearly been gaining market share for a number of quarters," he said. "When you look at our services improving 28 percent and our margins improving two-and-a-half percent, those are encouraging signs."

Toyota to start from bottom up, new chief says

Toyota must start again, "from the bottom up," new president Akio Toyoda said Thursday.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo, the grandson of Toyota Motors' founder said the company will focus on tailoring its product lines to customer demand in each region.

Toward that end, Toyoda named an executive vice president to head each region.

The company was not wrong to expand its business earlier this decade, Toyoda said, but he acknowledged that it might have overextended. Moving forward, the company's focus will be on products, rather than profits, he said.

Taking responsibility for the company's $4.4 billion net loss in the most recent fiscal year, Toyoda said he would cut his salary by 30 percent.
There are no current plans to close factories, a company executive said.

Analysts say Toyoda must drastically cut costs, but he offered no hints as to how or even whether that would be done at his first news conference as president.

The company board formally approved Toyoda, 53, for the job on Tuesday. He has been with Toyota for 24 years.

His grandfather slightly altered the family name when christening the company "Toyota," which has eight brush strokes in Japanese -- a fortuitous number.

"If they are more optimistic economic growth will reach 3.2 percent, but the problem is so quality of economic growth that," he said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said that this was related to economic conditions that are part of the RI still fragile circle, indicates the receipt of tax and export customs down business, and how should the government maintain economic growth of 4.5 percent dipatok the year 2009.

According to him, the business sector does not want to bring to the expansion because the rupiah is stable moreover do not export. "On this side of the recipient country will export any goods to limit imports in order not to suspension of the employees," he said.

RI can not embrace extreme Economy

Photobucket
Indonesia can not follow the system of economic liberalization or extreme extreme protectionist. The role of government to help economic actors in the stage of growth is still needed, in addition to protecting the public economy is weak.

According to the Minister of Finance as well as Coordinating Minister for Economic Position of Sri Mulyani Indrawati, the country does not have any system that implements the economic extremes.

China though, said Sri Mulyani, the system combines capitalism with communism. "If all the centralistic, top down, they may not take 1 billion people. Must have capitalism, "he said.

Meanwhile, the United States, more Sri Mulyani, acknowledge the behavior kapitalisnya damage the country's economy. "So they go back to the regulated economy (the economy, and control the government)," said Menkeu in Jakarta, last week.

Therefore, Menkeu words, if the government provides reasonable maximum support to the business that is still young with a variety of policies that alleviate. "U.S. State semaju also, to protect the government pengusahanya. When President George W Bush visited some time ago, for example, he specifically asks the U.S. interests in Indonesia, "said Sri Mulyani.

However, the protection of employers can not be done continuously. It does not educate them to be more independent. During President Soeharto's government, for example, the government provides protection and support to entrepreneurs, but it does not add capacity, thus increasing the spoil.

Effective Government

Sri Mulyani assert, any economic system that is used, the government needs a clean and effective. Economy requires referee, to oversee the flow of capital into the country so that the monopoly does not occur.

A good referee, said Sri Mulyani, the government is a healthy and have an efficient bureaucracy, serving the public. "People complain constantly because of competition in the economy that is not healthy. One of the government faktornya is not healthy, have the interest, and intervence economy. Government to be additional costs for the bureaucracy that is not efficient, "he said.

Most dangerous is if the government change the rules with a specific purpose. "Therefore, whoever governments, neoliberal economy, or, if the road will not disabotase the government," he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Domestic Trade Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Indonesia Bambang Soesatyo, increase basic prices of late can i become a momentum for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to mementahkan tudingan against neoliberal government.

This can be done with intervence market price to edit. "The President only needs to issue instructions to menterinya to conduct market operations," he said.

"In the middle of the anti-neoliberal economy, the President should instruct the menterinya (in order) to give extra attention to the basic price," he said.
