Dutch sunshine welcomes MotoGP to Assen

As the paddock took shape on Wednesday morning ahead of the Alice TT Assen the circuit was bathed in glorious sunshine.

On the eve of the seventh MotoGP round of the 2009 World Championship season, the Grand Prix circus arrived in the north of The Netherlands at the historic Dutch circuit of Assen, enjoying fantastic weather as final preparations were made on Wednesday morning.

After the superb visit to Barcelona, where a huge crowd watched Valentino Rossi’s incredible last corner victory over his Fiat Yamaha colleague Jorge Lorenzo - to put the pair level on points at the head of the standings with Ducati Marlboro’s Casey Stoner - more exciting racing and another big attendance are expected this weekend.

Wednesday’s preliminary events will see Lorenzo attend a motorshow event, called MotorDreamEvenTT, at the TT Museum next to the Dutch circuit at midday. The Spaniard will ride a Yamaha machine once belonging to Jarno Saarinen.

Colin Edwards will also be present to ride a 1980 500cc Yamaha, Chris Vermeulen will mount a 500cc Suzuki, Yuki Takahashi will ride a Hailwood replica Honda and Marco Melandri will ride a vintage Benelli.

Later in the afternoon the pre-event press conference will see championship front-runners Rossi, Lorenzo and Stoner line-up alongside Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) at 5pm.

Free practice commences on Thursday afternoon, 125cc at 12.40pm, MotoGP at 1.55pm and 250cc at 3.10pm, with good conditions predicted by the weathermen. However, Friday could see rain at Assen, with further showers and perhaps some storms for Saturday’s races.
